Thread: low oil pressure
Posted 21 September 2007 at 08:42:30 UK time
Chris Harris, Cumbria, United Kingdom

It could be that it is simply the oil light switch which is faulty.

Don't worry too much about the grade of oil - the first number relates to cold viscosity and we don't get too much seriously cold weather these days!

If the oil pressure is low because there is excessive wear of the big end & main bearings then there isn't a quick fix but it is surprising how long these engines will run for in that condition - but if the bearings are that worn you would probably hear some knocking.

You could try Halfords Classic Oil 20/50 i.e. thicker when hot.

Good luck,

Chris

i have just got given a 1978 mini clubman.
it has been sat on a drive for a number of years.
i have changed the oil and oil filter.
i also used a engine cleaner sludge remover with the old oil before changing the oil.
however, i was advised (and used) 15/40, but haynes says 10/40.
after a cold night i went to start the oil light has come on.
when you rev it high the light dims and almost disappears.

any thoughts or advise?

i have removed the relif vavle, it didnt look dirty or the spring wasnt loose and it was tight to put back on...

many many thanks in advance, stewart
