Thread: I want a Mini!

william fox, Illinois, USA, wcf59@nospamhotmail.com

I'm trying to finda classic mini to buy. I find lots of them that have been redone and are probably worth the price being asked, but I want one I can redo myself. It doesnt have to run or be damage free, as long as its complete. The problem is my fiannce manager (wife) is tight fisted (you'd think the money was hers...oh wait some of it is) and doesnt appreciate old British cars. I'm alloted $1000-1500 USD for the purchase. I dont want to turn one into a racer or a trailer queen, just a nice, well appreciated driver. Remove the NO SPAM from my email address to make contact.

I don't know how common they are in the USA but there are loads of old ones over here. I really don't know if it is worth it but you might even be able to find a next-to-nothing car and have it shipped over to you and still come in under your budget. Converting to LHD isn't a big deal.
An extreme suggestion but a suggestion nethertheless.

William,
Marc is right. I got hosed when I bought my pickup without looking at importing one. Even with shipping it can be much cheaper. Also, check greatbritishcars.com. The owner brings cars in by container several times each year and he seems to be reasonable and honest. I bought an MG Metro engine from him for my Mini.
Cheers,
David

My parents are selling two Italian Job minis on the pistonheads website - this one needs some work but is fine mechanically. We will be sorry to see them go as a mini has been in the family over the last 26 years!

Shipping to the US is the killer. Roll on- Roll off (RoRo) will cost about $1500 to the East Coast, a 40' container that'll hold 3 Minis will cost around $4000. For RoRo, the cars have to be runners. I don't think anyone offers PoPo (Push on-Push off).

I shipped 3 Minis from Liverpool to Montreal and when the dust settled, it cost me US$3850, August 2005.

I have a '67 Cooper shell. No VIN. No power unit in car, rebuildable 1300 power unit available. California solid body, no rust other than surface rust powder in the trunk. Battery box intact. Floors and sills solid. Has nut plates and body cut outs for right and left tanks, but no tanks. LOTS of new parts, including new trailing arms, bonnet, lower front valence front and rear glass, trim parts, switches and controls. Has sliding windows with new channels felts etc and good glass. Many original parts, including original steering wheel, column, horn button, new directional switch with the little green light. New wiring harness(alternator). Has bigger rear window piano hinge rear windows, hydrolastic has one hose damaged bladder looks ok. Converted to newer tail lights, have replacement panels and lights to fix. Has sun roof, needs latch mechanism. Was converted to RHD, dimmer switch still on left hand side. Have new LHD rack and ends. Have new Austin Cooper trim pieces, grey Newton interior with red carpet. New headliner. Has one front and all rear seat in good condition. Minilite copy wheels. Trunk lock and wiper motor say November 1967. I'll probably get around to restoring, but not for a few years. I have been told by people who know what they are doing that it is a Cooper body with all of the right parts.

I am selling a 1962 mini super. Only one owner (my grandfather). It was originally a MK 1 Mini, but 20 years ago my grandad replaced the shell with a MK 3 chassis. In order to keep the original windows, parts from a MK 2 car were used, but the boot, roof, interior as well as other parts are all still from the original 1962 MK 1 car. My grandad passed away in June this year (2010) and this is the reason for sale. She had an MOT up until 2009 when my Gdad's health began to deteroriate. She has always been kept in a garage and never used in the winter. Currently, as I said, the MOT is lapsed as well as the road tax - she is SORN presently. We would love someone to buy her and take as good a care of her as my grandad did. She was really loved! Oh, and her name is Molly!! :-) Please get in touch for any questions. Kirsty.
